All About Newfies

The Newfoundland is a loyal, intelligent, slobbering, shedding breed that can weigh up to 145+ lbs. Please do your research on owning a Newf before deciding to purchase one. They want and need to be part of your family. Newfies are known for their deep brown eyes, big heads, solid bodies, their dense double coat and their intelligence. They do shed and are a wet mouth breed, if you don't like hair or drool a Newfy probably is not the breed for you. Newfs do require lots of brushing to maintain their coat and a professional groom is recommended every few months to keep matting and undercoat from getting out of hand. Newfies need exercise so a fenced yard to play safely in is recommended, or they love long walks. When purchasing a Newf puppy it is important to understand how they grow and to use caution in over walking or exercising. You must build them up to long walks due to how they grow. You do not want to stress their joints. It is also highly recommended to not let your Newf pup to go up and down stairs for the first few months or jump off furniture or out of vehicles. These types of activities can increase risk of injury and can cause long term damage to growing pups. A high quality food is a must and it is recommended to only use a good quality giant or large breed puppy food for the first year to ensure proper nutrition and growth. Some breeders recommend adult food for your pup for a slower growth rate. All of the vets I have discussed this with all agree that a giant or large breed puppy food is specifically formulated with proper calcium and phosphorous ratios that meet the needs of these giants. However, do not just feed any puppy food, it must be designed for the large breeds. Newfies need a slow and steady growth for the first 2 years.
